Chapter 2 - The Hallway Confrontation

The sight of the little boy sitting on the medical bed shattered everything I thought I knew about my life.

He looked so incredibly small, fragile, and utterly exhausted.

Grace stood outside the room, her shoulders trembling with quiet sobs.

I stepped closer, the sound of my wet shoes squeaking loudly on the linoleum floor.

Grace turned around sharply, wiping her tears away the second she saw me.

She demanded to know why I had followed her.

I told her I had every right to be here in this hospital.

I pointed at the boy through the glass and asked if he was my son.

Grace looked away, her jaw tight and her eyes refusing to meet mine.

She whispered that he was just a little boy fighting for his life.

I grabbed her arms gently but firmly, forcing her to look at me.

I demanded to know if those three children were mine.

A single tear escaped her eye and rolled down her pale cheek.

She finally nodded.

The confirmation felt like the ground had just opened up beneath my feet.

I asked her how she could possibly keep this a massive secret from me for three years.

I accused her of being cruel and selfish for stealing my children.

Grace let out a bitter, humorless laugh that echoed in the quiet hallway.

She pushed my hands away and stepped back as if my touch physically burned her.

She told me I had no right to play the victim tonight.

She said she had tried to tell me the truth the day she left our house.

I frowned, remembering that terrible day perfectly.

I told her she had just packed her bags and left a note on the kitchen counter while I was at work.

Grace shook her head, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce anger.

She told me she had called me five times from the emergency room that day because she was bleeding and terrified of losing the babies.

She said she begged my mother to get ahold of me during my important board meeting.

My blood ran completely cold.

I told Grace my mother never gave me any message.

Grace stared at me with absolute disgust.

She said my mother did not just ignore the desperate message.

She said my mother showed up at the hospital with a ruthless lawyer and a terrifying threat.
