Chapter 8 - The Viper's Nest

"Hello, wife," Dante said, his voice echoing like thunder in the basement.

Vanessa froze, all the color draining from her beautiful face.

Leo stumbled backward, his hands shaking as he aimed his revolver at Dante.

"How is this possible?" Leo stammered in absolute disbelief.

"You forgot that I own the chemist who makes your toxins, Leo," Dante sneered.

"He gave Rossi a saline solution mixed with a heavy sedative."

Dante stepped off the metal table, keeping his gun pressed firmly against Vanessa's skull.

"Drop the gun, Leo, or I paint this furnace with her brains," Dante threatened.

Leo looked at Vanessa, then looked at the two Russian guards standing by the door.

Instead of dropping his weapon, Leo started to laugh.

It was a cold, hysterical sound that sent chills down my spine.

"You think I actually care about her?" Leo mocked, pointing his gun at Vanessa.

Vanessa shrieked in terror as she realized the depth of Leo's betrayal.

"I just needed her to get rid of you so I could take over the family," Leo confessed.

The two Russian guards raised their automatic rifles, aiming them at all three of us.

"Kill them all," Leo ordered smoothly.

Dante didn't hesitate for a microsecond.

He shoved Vanessa forcefully into the two Russian guards, knocking their aim off balance.

Dante grabbed my hand, and we dove behind a massive stack of empty wooden coffins.

Gunfire erupted, shredding the wood above our heads into a million splinters.

Mia was still tied to the chair in the center of the room, screaming in terror.

"I have to get my sister!" I yelled over the deafening roar of the bullets.

Dante pulled a spare pistol from his ankle holster and handed it to me.

"Cover me," he shouted, his eyes filled with absolute determination.

Before I could even process the command, Dante sprinted out from behind the cover.

He ran directly into the hail of bullets, firing back with deadly precision.
