Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage

The man in the tailored suit glared at me with silent murder in his eyes.
His name was Leo, and he was Dante's most trusted advisor.
I wanted to scream the truth right then and there.
But Leo casually rested his hand on the handle of his gun.
He was daring me to speak.
If I opened my mouth, he would shoot me and claim I was the assassin.
"Take the girl with us," Dante ordered, pressing the handkerchief to his head.
"She saved my life, so she is under my protection."
Leo's jaw clenched, but he nodded obediently.
They shoved me into the back of a heavily armored SUV.
We drove for an hour until we reached a massive, fortress-like mansion hidden in the woods.
Dante ordered a private doctor to treat my scraped hands.
Then he locked me inside a lavish guest bedroom on the third floor.
I paced the expensive rug, knowing Leo would come for me the second Dante was asleep.
I checked the windows, but they were made of shatterproof glass.
There was no way out of this golden cage.
Around three in the morning, I heard a soft click at my bedroom door.
The handle slowly turned.
I grabbed a heavy bronze lamp from the nightstand and hid beside the doorframe.
The door crept open, revealing a dark figure holding a silenced pistol.
I swung the lamp with all my strength.
The metal struck the intruder's arm, sending the gun clattering to the floor.
The man cursed and lunged at me in the dark.
I scrambled backward, but he grabbed my ankle and dragged me down.
He raised a hunting knife high above his head.

Just as the blade came down, the bedroom lights flickered on.
Dante stood in the doorway, holding a massive shotgun pointed directly at the intruder's head.
