Chapter 4 - The Waitress's Secret

Dante stared at me in the moonlight, completely motionless.

The sound of distant sirens echoed through the trees.

"Leo has been my brother for fifteen years," Dante said, his voice dangerously low.

"He was the man in the booth, Dante," I insisted.

"I recognized his voice at the cliff, but I couldn't say anything because he had his gun on me."

Dante closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, processing the ultimate betrayal.

"We need a place to hide where neither Leo nor the Russians can find us," Dante said.

I led him to a cheap, rundown motel on the edge of the city limits.

I paid for the room with the cash tips I had hidden in my shoe.

We sat on the sagging mattress, listening to the rain pound against the thin window.

"If Rossi is involved, they know everything about me," I said, my hands shaking.

"They know my address, my schedule, and my family."

Dante pulled out a secure satellite phone he had hidden in his jacket.

"Who is your family, Cara?" he asked gently.

"My little sister, Mia," I cried, pulling my hair in panic.

"She is a freshman at the state college downtown."

Dante quickly dialed a number to contact his few remaining loyal men.

He ordered them to extract Mia from her dorm room immediately.

We waited in agonizing silence for twenty minutes.

Dante's phone finally buzzed.

He put it on speaker, expecting a rescue confirmation.

Instead, Vanessa's sweet, venomous laugh filled the small motel room.

"Hello, darling," Vanessa purred.

"I hear you survived the car crash, but unfortunately, your little waitress won't be so lucky."

Vanessa flipped the camera on her phone.

The video showed my teenage sister, Mia, tied to a metal chair in a dark warehouse.
