Chapter 1 - The Confession

The rain lashed against my face as I kneeled in the mud.
Dozens of guns were pointed directly at my chest.
Dante Moretti kept his iron grip on my wrist.
His cold gray eyes studied my terrified expression.
"I asked you a question, waitress," he repeated softly.
I swallowed hard, tasting blood and rain.
"I overheard your wife, Vanessa, at the restaurant," I stammered.
Dante did not blink, but his grip tightened slightly.
"She was in a private booth with another man," I continued.
"He told her the brakes were cut and that you would die on the mountain road."
A heavy silence fell over the armed men surrounding us.
Nobody dared to breathe.
Dante slowly let go of my wrist and stood up.
He ignored his bleeding forehead and looked at his ruined car in the ravine.
"Who was the man with my wife?" Dante asked, turning back to me.
I shook my head frantically.
"I didn't see his face, I swear."
"I only heard his voice," I pleaded.
A tall man in a tailored black suit stepped forward from the crowd of guards.
He lowered his gun and offered Dante a clean handkerchief.
"Boss, we need to get you to a doctor," the man said.
I froze completely.
My heart stopped beating in my chest.
That voice belonged to the man from the restaurant booth.
I looked up and locked eyes with Dante's second-in-command.

He was the man sleeping with Vanessa.
And he realized instantly that I recognized his voice.
