Chapter 9 - The Standoff

Maya lay on the hard tile floor, shielding Lily with her entire body.
The guards quickly surrounded her, their rifles pointed downward.
Julian stood over my granddaughter, the silver pistol unwavering in his grip.
"You are a monster," Maya choked out, tears of fury filling her eyes.
"I am simply a businessman," Julian replied, pulling back the hammer of his gun.
My heart shattered as I realized this was truly the end of the line.
I closed my eyes, preparing to launch myself at him despite my age.
Suddenly, the shrill wail of police sirens pierced the night air.
It was not just one siren, but dozens of them, growing louder by the second.
Julian frowned, his cold composure faltering for the very first time.
"I thought you paid the local sheriff to handle the authorities," Julian barked at a guard.
"We did, sir," the guard stammered, looking nervously toward the shattered windows.
Red and blue lights flooded the clinic walls, illuminating the room in chaotic flashes.
A booming voice echoed from a megaphone outside the building.
"This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation!" the voice commanded.
"The building is surrounded, so put down your weapons and come out with your hands up!"
I let out a gasp of shock and pure relief.
"How?" Julian demanded, looking angrily at me.
I smiled, remembering the burner phone Maya had taken from the man in scrubs.
"While Maya was driving, I sent the buyer's text messages to my late husband's lawyer," I revealed.
"He is a former federal prosecutor, and he clearly made some calls."
Julian's face twisted in absolute rage.
He aimed his pistol back down at Maya.
"I am not leaving empty-handed," Julian hissed.
Before he could pull the trigger, the clinic's front windows exploded inward.
Federal agents in heavy tactical armor breached the building from all sides.
Flashbang grenades detonated in the hallway, blinding the mercenaries instantly.
The guard holding me dropped his grip to cover his ears.
I threw my weight forward, tackling Julian at the knees just as he fired.
The gunshot missed Maya, shattering the surgical light above her head.
An agent tackled Julian to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back.
The rest of the heavily armed guards quickly threw their weapons down in surrender.
An FBI medic rushed into the room and immediately knelt beside Maya.
"Are you and the baby injured?" the medic asked, checking Lily's vitals.
"We are okay," Maya sobbed, holding her daughter close to her heart.
I sat up on the floor, my eighty-one-year-old body bruised and completely exhausted.

We had survived the longest night of our lives.
The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
