Chapter 10 - The Calm After the Storm

The morning sun poured warmly through the windows of the hospital recovery room.

Lily was resting peacefully in a secure bassinet, her breathing steady and strong.

The pediatric surgeon had examined my stitches and declared them a perfect job.

Maya sat in a reclining chair, holding my bruised hand with deep gratitude.

The FBI agents had visited us earlier to deliver the final updates.

Julian, the wealthy buyer, was facing federal trafficking charges and a lifetime in prison.

Carter and Evelyn had been apprehended at the local airport trying to board a flight.

Thomas, the corrupt sheriff, was arrested in his own precinct by state troopers.

The massive trust fund left by Maya's first husband remained entirely untouched.

Our family's wealth, and more importantly, our safety, was finally secured.

Carter would never be able to threaten or manipulate my granddaughter ever again.

"We are going to be okay, Grandma," Maya smiled, wiping a joyful tear from her cheek.

"Yes, my darling, we absolutely are," I replied, feeling true peace for the first time.

Two months later, the horrors of that night felt like a distant memory.

We were back in our historic farmhouse, the broken doors and windows fully repaired.

Maya was singing softly in the nursery, watching Lily play on a soft blanket.

I walked out onto the front porch and found a small, unmarked black gift box sitting on the rocking chair.

I slowly lifted the lid, revealing a solid silver baby rattle resting on a bed of velvet.

Beneath the heavy rattle was a crisp white card sealed with black wax.

The note read: 'Julian was just a middleman; the real buyer is still waiting for their delivery.'
