Chapter 1 - The Hidden Recording

My granddaughter stared at the travel bag while the heavy lamp shade rolled slowly across the carpet.

It came to a rest against the wall, revealing something black and rectangular hidden inside the metal frame.

Maya cautiously walked over and picked up the strange object.

It was a small, flashing digital audio recorder that Carter had secretly planted in the nursery.

We were not just victims of a sudden violent outburst.

This entire attack had been carefully planned and monitored.

Maya pressed the playback button on the side of the small device.

Carter's voice immediately echoed through the quiet room, sounding cold and calculating.

"The trust fund only pays out to a surviving parent if the infant dies of natural or accidental causes," his recorded voice explained.

Then, Evelyn's shrill voice responded on the tape.

"A heavy lamp falling on a newborn is a tragic accident, Carter," she reasoned.

The recording clicked off, leaving Maya and me frozen in pure horror.

Maya turned her attention back to the travel bag on the changing table.

She aggressively unzipped the side compartments and pulled out a handful of tiny clothes.

Underneath the pink onesies, she found a dark blue passport.

She flipped it open, and all the color completely drained from her face.

"What is it?" I asked, keeping my great-granddaughter pressed tightly against my chest.

"It is a passport for Lily, but the last name is different," she replied, her voice shaking.

She turned the booklet toward me so I could see the photograph.

The mother listed on the official document was not Maya, but Evelyn.

"They were going to hurt her, collect the money, and flee the country," I concluded, my heart pounding rapidly.

"We have to call the police right now," Maya said, pulling her cell phone from her pocket.

She stared at the screen, her expression quickly turning to absolute panic.

"I have no signal in here," she muttered, holding the phone higher in the air.

"Use the landline in the hallway," I urged her, adjusting my grip on the baby.

Maya rushed out of the nursery and grabbed the corded phone off the wall hook.

I heard the frantic tapping of the heavy plastic buttons.

Then, I heard her let out a terrified, frustrated sob.

"The line has been physically cut," Maya said, walking back into the room.

Suddenly, the sharp ring of Carter's forgotten cell phone shattered the silence.

The phone was lying on the carpet near the heavy brass lamp base.

Maya cautiously picked it up and stared at the caller ID.

"It is Evelyn," Maya whispered, her eyes wide with fear.

She pressed the answer button and brought the speaker to her ear without saying a single word.

"Carter, we are waiting in the driveway," Evelyn's voice hissed through the speaker.

"The power lines are cut, so just grab the baby and come down."

Maya dropped the phone in horror just as the lights in the entire house went pitch black.
