Chapter 3 - The Stranger in Scrubs

We froze as the heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside our door.

It was not Carter anymore.

These footsteps were slow, methodical, and chillingly calm.

Maya grabbed the heavy brass lamp from the floor and stood in front of me.

"Who is out there?" Carter yelled from the other end of the hall.

There was a sickening thud, followed by the sound of a body hitting the floor.

Carter groaned in pain and then went completely silent.

Whoever had just arrived was not working with my granddaughter's husband.

The doorknob to the nursery slowly turned, but the deadbolt held it shut.

"Open the door, Mrs. Davis," a deep, raspy voice called out.

"I am here to collect the package."

Maya gripped the lamp tighter and held her breath.

I rocked Lily gently, praying she would not make a sound.

Suddenly, the wood around the lock splintered inward.

A massive kick sent the nursery door flying open.

A tall man dressed in dark medical scrubs stepped into the room.

He held a long, metallic syringe in his right hand.

"Give me the child," the stranger demanded, stepping into the moonlight.

Maya did not hesitate for a single second.

She swung the heavy brass lamp with all her might.

The heavy base struck the side of the man's head with a sickening crunch.

He stumbled backward, dropping the syringe onto the carpet.

Before he could recover, Maya kicked him hard in the chest.

He collapsed into the hallway, unconscious.

Maya quickly slammed the broken door shut and shoved a heavy dresser against it.

She picked up the syringe from the floor using a tissue.

"Look at the label," she whispered, holding her phone light over the glass vial.

It was labeled as potassium chloride.

"A lethal injection," I said, feeling a wave of nausea wash over me.

"He was sent to stop her heart and make it look like a post-operative complication."

Maya searched the unconscious man's pockets through the gap in the doorway.

She pulled out a sleek, black burner phone.

The screen lit up with a new text message.

Maya read the message aloud, her voice trembling with disbelief.

"The text says the payment has cleared, and the client wants the baby delivered tonight."

We were not just fighting Carter and Evelyn anymore.

There was a wealthy buyer waiting for my great-granddaughter.

And a second text message immediately popped up on the screen.

"I am sending the cleanup crew to your location right now."
