Chapter 9 - The Crossfire

The underground clinic instantly erupted into a deafening warzone.
Silas opened fire, his bullets shattering the expensive medical monitors and glass cabinets.
Evelyn dove behind a heavy supply cart, returning fire with her silver pistol.
I did not waste a single fraction of a second.
I crawled across the floor covered in broken glass and grabbed Belle from the operating table.
I dragged the sleeping little girl underneath a massive, reinforced steel surgical table.
I covered her small body with my own, praying the thick metal above us would stop the flying bullets.
Harlan grabbed the fallen mercenary's rifle and began firing relentlessly at Silas's men.
The noise in the enclosed basement room was absolutely agonizing.
Harlan moved with the lethal grace of a man who had spent his entire life in the criminal underworld.
He took down three mercenaries with terrifying, pinpoint accuracy.
Silas realized his men were losing the firefight and completely changed his tactics.
He sprinted across the room and violently grabbed Evelyn by the hair.
He dragged her out from behind the supply cart, using her as a human shield.
Silas pressed the barrel of his rifle directly against Evelyn's temple.
He screamed at Harlan to drop his weapon immediately, or he would blow Evelyn's head off.
Harlan stopped firing and slowly stepped out from the shadows.
He looked at the wife who had betrayed him and the man who had ruined his life.
Evelyn cried out, begging Harlan to save her despite everything she had done.
Harlan stared at her with incredibly cold, dead eyes.
He slowly lowered his rifle and placed it on the floor.

Silas laughed victoriously, enjoying his moment of absolute dominance.
He pushed Evelyn away in disgust and aimed his rifle directly at the steel table hiding me and Belle.
