Chapter 7 - The Serum

I stared at the woman standing in the center of the operating room.
Evelyn Voss possessed a cold, terrifying beauty that perfectly matched her husband's aura.
She calmly discarded her bloody gloves into a medical waste bin.
Harlan tried to stand up from his cot, his voice trembling with a mix of fury and disbelief.
He demanded to know why she had faked her death and abandoned their only child.
Evelyn walked over to him and forcefully pushed him back down onto the mattress.
She explained that she had to disappear to protect Belle from a rival criminal syndicate.
She claimed the Markov family had placed a massive bounty on her head to cripple Harlan's empire.
Evelyn said she had spent the last three years building this secret clinic to fight back from the shadows.
Harlan glared at her, completely refusing to believe a single word she said.
He accused her of being a coward who ran away when the family business got too dangerous.
I stood quietly in the corner, feeling entirely out of place in this deadly family reunion.
Evelyn ignored her husband's insults and walked over to check Belle's resting heart rate.
She asked me to hand her a small black medical bag resting on the nearby counter.
I walked over to the steel counter and picked up the heavy leather bag.
The zipper was slightly open, revealing the contents inside.
I saw a spare stethoscope, several vials of the specialized serum, and a small framed photograph.
I looked closely at the picture, and my blood ran absolutely cold.
It was a photograph of Evelyn smiling and passionately kissing Silas.
The head of security who had just tried to murder us all was her secret lover.
I realized Evelyn had not been hiding from Harlan's enemies for the last three years.
She had been actively conspiring with Silas to violently dismantle her husband's entire empire.
I slowly zipped the bag shut, my mind racing with pure panic.
I turned around to hand the bag to Evelyn, trying to keep my face completely neutral.

Evelyn smiled warmly and thanked me for saving her precious daughter.
She then pulled a silenced silver pistol from her surgical gown and aimed it directly at my face.
