Chapter 10 - The Debt Paid

Silas placed his finger firmly on the trigger of his assault rifle.
He sneered, loudly declaring that he was going to wipe out the entire Voss bloodline tonight.
Before Silas could apply pressure to the trigger, Harlan pulled a hidden backup pistol from his ankle holster.
Harlan moved faster than the human eye could track.
He fired a single, perfect shot across the chaotic room.
The bullet struck Silas directly between the eyes, instantly snapping his head back.
The traitor collapsed onto the bloody tiles, dead before his body even hit the floor.
The two remaining mercenaries dropped their weapons and immediately surrendered in sheer terror.
Harlan kicked their guns away and ordered them to tie themselves to the heavy steel pipes.
He ignored Evelyn entirely as she sat weeping on the floor, surrounded by the ruins of her betrayal.
Harlan walked over to the steel surgical table and gently pulled me and Belle out from underneath it.
He wrapped his strong arms around us, holding his daughter tightly against his chest.
Two months later, the terrifying nightmare was finally over.
I stood on the beautiful marble balcony of my own private suite in the new Voss estate.
Harlan had kept his promise and cleared every single debt I had ever owed.
He offered me a permanent, highly paid position as Belle's guardian and private tutor.
The little girl was completely healthy, safe, and happily playing in the lush gardens below.
Evelyn was securely locked away in a federal prison, entirely stripped of her power and influence.
I finally had the family, the security, and the peace I had always dreamed of finding.
I smiled at the sunset and walked back inside to unpack the final box from my old, terrible apartment.
At the very bottom of the cardboard box was a sealed envelope addressed to me in my late father's handwriting.

I tore it open and pulled out a faded photograph of my father proudly shaking hands with Silas.
Written on the back in fresh, dark red ink were the chilling words, "Avenge me, Rue."
