Chapter 8 - The Hostage

Evelyn held the silver pistol with a perfectly steady hand.
Her warm smile instantly vanished, replaced by a gaze of cold, calculating murder.
Harlan shouted her name, struggling to reach the weapon holstered on his belt.
Evelyn calmly shifted her aim and shot Harlan in his uninjured leg.
He collapsed onto the floor with a grunt of agonizing pain, his gun sliding entirely out of reach.
Evelyn stepped over his bleeding body and pointed the gun back at my chest.
She confessed that she and Silas had orchestrated the entire kidnapping to extort Harlan's fortune.
She needed an innocent, untraceable pawn like me to make the rescue look completely random.
Evelyn said I had played my part perfectly, but unfortunately, there could be absolutely no witnesses left alive.
I backed away slowly, my hands raised in a desperate surrender.
I begged her to let me go, promising I would never tell anyone what I had seen tonight.
Evelyn laughed, a cruel and hollow sound that echoed off the sterile tile walls.
She cocked the hammer of her pistol, preparing to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, the heavy steel doors of the underground clinic exploded entirely inward.
Thick smoke and debris filled the room as heavily armed mercenaries stormed through the breach.
Silas stepped through the smoke, holding an assault rifle and looking incredibly angry.
He saw Evelyn holding the gun on me and immediately raised his own weapon.
Silas screamed at Evelyn, asking why she had locked the main security doors against him.
Evelyn lowered her pistol, her face twisting into a mask of pure betrayal.
She realized Silas was not here to rescue her or share the stolen Voss empire.
Silas wanted the entire fortune for himself, and Evelyn was just another loose end.
He aimed his assault rifle directly at the woman he supposedly loved.
Before Silas could fire, Harlan grabbed a discarded surgical scalpel from the floor.

Harlan lunged forward with terrifying speed and drove the blade deeply into the nearest mercenary's ankle.
The man screamed and dropped his weapon, creating a moment of absolute, bloody chaos.
