Chapter 8 - The Brother's Ultimatum

The man stepped into the dim light of a streetlamp.

It was Nicolas, dressed in an immaculate tailored suit that looked entirely out of place in the filthy alley.

He smiled, a cold and hollow expression that sent chills down Elise's spine.

"Hand over the drive and the notarial copy, Mathis," Nicolas demanded smoothly.

Mathis stood perfectly still, shielding Elise behind his body.

"If you shoot me, you'll never find the original documents," Mathis bluffed.

Nicolas let out a dry, humorless laugh.

"I don't need to shoot you yet," Nicolas said, gesturing toward the street.

Two massive black SUVs pulled up, blocking both ends of the alley.

Heavily armed mercenaries stepped out, aiming automatic rifles at the couple.

"Get in the car," Nicolas ordered.

Mathis had no choice but to guide Elise into the back seat of the nearest SUV.

Nicolas sat opposite them, pouring himself a glass of whiskey from a small crystal decanter.

"We are going to the Varenne headquarters," Nicolas explained casually.

"Once we arrive, you will sign over your shares, or I will let my men practice their interrogation techniques on your lovely wife."

Mathis secretly slid his hand into his pocket, turning on the GPS tracker he had grabbed from the electronics shop.

The SUV arrived at the towering glass skyscraper of the Varenne empire.

They were escorted at gunpoint into the private express elevator leading to the executive penthouse.

The elevator doors chimed and slid open to reveal the massive, luxurious boardroom.

Sitting calmly at the head of the long mahogany table was their father, very much alive.
