Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

The loud wail of police sirens immediately pierced the quiet night.
Nicolas had traced the drive's IP address the moment it connected to the internet.
Flashing blue and red lights danced across the walls of the electronics shop.
"He framed us for the explosion in the sewers," Mathis realized.
He slammed the laptop shut, shoving it into the duffel bag.
"The back door is blocked," Elise cried out, looking at the security monitor.
Tactical police units were already taking positions at both exits of the building.
Mathis noticed an old service hatch in the ceiling leading to the roof.
He stacked two heavy desks together to create a makeshift ladder.
He helped Elise climb up, her face pale with exhaustion and fear.
They crawled onto the cold, tar-paper roof just as the police breached the front door downstairs.
Rain lashed at their faces as they ran toward the edge of the building.
The gap between their roof and the neighboring apartment complex was terrifyingly wide.
Mathis jumped first, landing hard on the opposite side.
He reached his hand out over the terrifying drop.
Elise leaped, her fingers slipping on the wet concrete before Mathis hauled her up to safety.
They scrambled down a rusted fire escape into a pitch-black alleyway.

A tall figure stepped out from behind a dumpster, completely blocking their only path to the street.
The man raised a suppressed pistol and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Mathis's forehead.
