Chapter 4 - The Underground Labyrinth

Wood splinters exploded into the air as the gunshot echoed off the concrete walls.

Mathis tackled Elise to the dirty floor, covering her body with his own.

He pulled his pistol and fired blindly toward the ramp where the sniper was positioned.

The muzzle flash briefly illuminated the dark garage.

"Crawl behind the concrete pillar," he ordered.

Elise scrambled across the floor, her breathing ragged and panicked.

Mathis grabbed the black duffel bag and threw it over his shoulder.

He noticed a maintenance door marked with a faded yellow biohazard sign.

Providing covering fire, he pushed Elise through the heavy steel door.

They found themselves in an old, forgotten section of the Paris sewer system.

The smell of damp earth and stagnant water filled their lungs.

They navigated the slippery walkways using only the dim flashlight on Mathis's phone.

Elise leaned against the damp brick wall, wincing as a strong contraction hit her.

"We need to stop," she cried out softly.

Mathis scanned the dark tunnel ahead to ensure it was clear.

His flashlight beam swept across a rusty iron pipe.

Tied to a chair beneath the pipe was a man whose face was beaten beyond recognition.

The man weakly lifted his head, spitting out a mouthful of blood.

It was Master Roche, their trusted family lawyer.
