Chapter 8 - The Hostage Crisis

The courtroom air grew incredibly thick and heavy with the terrifying reality of an active shooter.

My father kept the revolver aimed at the judge, sweating profusely and breathing in short, panicked gasps.

Mark slowly backed away toward the rear exit, desperately trying to abandon his clients to save his own cowardly life.

My father noticed the movement and fired a deafening warning shot directly into the plaster ceiling.

Dust and debris rained down upon the wooden benches as Mark dropped to his knees in sheer terror.

I remained perfectly still in my uniform, my intense combat training slowing down my perception of time.

I calculated the exact distance between my table and my father, knowing I only had a fraction of a second to act.

I spoke to him in a calm, highly authoritative voice, completely ignoring the deadly weapon pointed in my direction.

I told him that the cartel was going to kill him anyway, regardless of whether he acquired the farmhouse deed.

I explained that I had already secured my grandfather's journal and knew everything about the hidden commercial aquifer.

My father’s eyes widened in utter shock, realizing that his ultimate secret had been completely exposed.

His grip on the revolver loosened slightly, the heavy reality of his absolute failure finally crushing his spirit.

I slowly took a deliberate step toward him, raising my empty hands in a very peaceful, calming gesture.

I promised him that if he put the gun down, I would personally protect him from the cartel's assassins.

He looked at me with tears streaming down his face, the weapon slowly beginning to lower toward the floor.

Just as I was about to safely disarm him, a heavy weight violently crashed into my bad knee from behind.

Mark had desperately tackled me from the blind spot, hoping to cause enough chaos to escape through the side door.

He screamed at my father to shoot me, claiming I was the only thing standing between them and the cartel's money.
