Chapter 5 - The Corrupt Deputy

I stared at the police deputy's face, realizing exactly how deep the cartel's corruption ran in my hometown.

Chief Deputy Miller smiled a cold, ruthless smile and kept his assault rifle aimed directly at my chest.

He told me that I was making a terrible mistake by fighting against inevitable progress.

He explained that my parents had completely sold me out to save their own miserable lives.

They had eagerly provided him with my exact military schedule and personal habits.

He demanded that I hand over my grandfather's journal immediately, promising to let me walk away if I complied.

I slowly raised my hands in a gesture of fake surrender, keeping my eyes locked on his weapon.

I told him that the journal was hidden in the truck and offered to show him exactly where it was.

He scoffed at my surrender, stepping closer to quickly pat me down for weapons.

That was the fatal tactical error I had been waiting for him to make.

I sharply kicked his dominant knee, causing his leg to buckle instantly with a sickening pop.

He screamed in agony, and his rifle fired wildly into the plaster ceiling.

I grabbed the barrel of the hot weapon, twisting it violently out of his grasp and tossing it across the room.

I delivered a swift, heavy elbow strike to his jaw, sending him crashing into the dusty dining table.

He groaned in pain, spitting blood onto the hardwood floor as he tried to reach for his backup sidearm.

I drew my own pistol and aimed it squarely at his forehead, ordering him to freeze completely.

I quickly disarmed him and used his own tactical cuffs to secure him to the heavy cast-iron radiator.

I retrieved Knox from the closet, and the brave dog immediately stood guard over the captive deputy.

I searched Miller's tactical vest and found a burner phone filled with highly incriminating text messages.

The messages detailed exactly how the cartel was bribing the police force and blackmailing the court system.

But the most terrifying message was from Mark, my ex-fiancé and my parents' lawyer.

Mark had texted the deputy just twenty minutes ago with a very specific, chilling instruction.

He ordered the deputy to plant illegal narcotics in my kitchen and shoot me for resisting arrest.
