Chapter 7 - The Great Escape

Beatrice’s cold eyes were totally wild and completely devoid of any basic human empathy.

"Going down so soon, ladies?" she asked while cocking the heavy metal hammer of the revolver.

Maya screamed loudly and instinctively wrapped her arms around her stomach to protect her baby.

I stepped aggressively in front of the wheelchair to block the lethal gun with my own body.

"Are you really stupid enough to murder us in a busy hospital full of witnesses?" I challenged her firmly.

"The security cameras in this specific hallway mysteriously went offline five minutes ago," Beatrice smiled menacingly.

She took a confident step into the small elevator cabin and pressed the cold barrel of the gun against my chest.

"My son deeply needs that baby to secure his permanent legal control over your family trust fund," Beatrice whispered.

"But I would rather happily scrape you both off the floor than let you ruin our brilliant plans," she hissed.

I slowly raised my empty hands while scanning the cramped space for any possible weapon.

"You will absolutely never get away with this, Beatrice," I said merely to keep her talking.

"I have gotten away with much worse things for the past twenty years," she bragged arrogantly.

Suddenly, the service elevator violently jolted and the bright emergency lights flickered on.

Sarah had forcefully overridden the elevator controls directly from the basement security panel.

The sudden mechanical jerk threw Beatrice completely off balance for a crucial split second.

I lunged forward fiercely and grabbed the hot barrel of the revolver with both of my hands.

Beatrice shrieked in anger and violently pulled the trigger in a blind panic.

The gunshot was deafeningly loud in the tiny metal box, but the stray bullet shattered the ceiling light instead of hitting us.

I twisted her wrist violently until I heard a highly sickening popping sound.

Beatrice instantly dropped the weapon and fell heavily to her knees while clutching her broken wrist.

I quickly kicked the gun entirely out of the elevator and slammed my fist into the emergency close button.

The heavy doors slid shut safely just as Ethan and his guards rounded the corner of the hallway.

The elevator rapidly descended to the dark basement level where Sarah was anxiously waiting.

The doors opened widely to reveal Sarah standing next to a stolen laundry supply van.

"Get her safely inside the back of the van right now!" Sarah yelled over the blaring hospital alarms.

I pushed Maya’s wheelchair swiftly up the metal ramp and secured her safely in the back.

I jumped eagerly into the passenger seat just as Sarah slammed her foot on the gas pedal.

We smashed aggressively right through the wooden exit barrier of the loading dock and sped out into the city streets.

"Where exactly are we taking her to keep her safe?" I shouted loudly over the roaring engine.

"I have a highly secure safe house off the grid that Ethan does not know about," Sarah replied while shifting gears.

I turned back to carefully check on Maya, but her pale eyes were completely rolled back in her head.

The intense stress and the lingering rat poison had finally pushed her traumatized body past its absolute limit.

Bright red blood was slowly beginning to pool heavily on the fabric of the van seat beneath her.
