Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the Storm

I walked confidently into the central police precinct with my head held incredibly high.
The normally chaotic lobby was completely silent as working officers stared at me with newfound respect.
Marcus was waiting happily near the holding cells with a massive, highly victorious smile on his face.
"The FBI just officially took over the massive investigation into their criminal network," Marcus informed me happily.
I walked boldly up to the highly reinforced glass window of the primary holding cell.
Ethan was sitting miserably on the cold metal bench wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit.
His arrogant smirk was completely gone, fully replaced by the pathetic physical trembling of a coward.
Beatrice was angrily in the cell next to him, screaming hysterically at the guards about calling her expensive lawyers.
"You are absolutely going to spend the rest of your miserable life in federal prison," I told Ethan strictly through the glass.
He stubbornly refused to look at me and simply stared at the floor in utter and total defeat.
"Your fake debt contract is entirely void, and you will never see my daughter or her baby ever again," I promised him.
I walked freely out of the police station and took a deep, refreshing breath of the freezing December air.
The brutal, terrible storm that had constantly threatened to destroy my family was finally over.
Exactly a month later, Maya was safely and happily recovering in her lovely childhood bedroom at my house.
The warm color had fully returned to her cheeks, and she was happily decorating a beautiful nursery for the baby.
Sarah had successfully secured her permanent new identity and moved safely to a beautiful coastal town.
Maya’s stressful divorce had been finalized rapidly, and she legally retained absolute full custody of her unborn child.
We were finally totally safe, completely free, and incredibly happy.
I walked slowly downstairs to lock the heavy front door for the night and turn off the bright porch lights.
I suddenly noticed a beautifully wrapped black gift box sitting silently on the welcome mat.
I cautiously opened the front door, picked up the mysterious box, and slowly untied the silk ribbon.
Inside the box was a small silver baby rattle and a handwritten note written in absolutely perfect cursive.

"Ethan was just an entry-level employee in my massive organization," the terrifying note read.
"I am the actual boss, Eleanor, and you still legally owe me a child."
