Chapter 2 - The Ambush

The quiet suburban street suddenly erupted into complete chaos.
Mr. Harris didn’t arrive entirely alone.
Two marked police cruisers aggressively pulled up right behind his dark sedan, their lights flashing brightly but silently.
I watched eagerly from Helen’s upstairs window as the officers stepped quickly out of their vehicles.
Lauren’s parents completely froze in the driveway, dropping a heavy box of my expensive antique china.
The man in the sharp suit immediately tried to subtly slide the signed paperwork back into his thick folder.
Mr. Harris walked briskly up the driveway, pointing a firm finger directly at the suited man.
“Do not move a single muscle, Mr. Sterling,” Mr. Harris commanded loudly.
Daniel looked absolutely terrified, his face draining of all color as the police officers approached him.
“What is going on here?” Lauren shrieked, aggressively stepping in front of her husband.
“This is our private property!”
“Actually, ma'am, it officially belongs to Rachel Adams,” the lead officer stated coldly.
“And we received a verified report of massive real estate fraud currently in progress.”
I quickly turned away from the window and practically ran down Helen’s stairs.
“I am going over there,” I told Helen firmly as she handed me my coat.
“Be incredibly careful, Rachel, they look like cornered animals,” she warned softly.
I walked across the street, my head held incredibly high, feeling the phantom weight of my late husband’s hand on my shoulder.
As I stepped onto my own driveway, Daniel finally saw me.
“Mom?” he gasped, completely dropping the expensive vase he was holding.
“I thought you were at Aunt Sarah’s house.”
“I lied, Daniel,” I said smoothly, stopping right next to my discarded wedding portrait.
I carefully picked up the heavy frame, gently brushing the dirt off Robert’s smiling face.
Lauren’s fake, confident composure completely shattered into pure, aggressive panic.
“She verbally agreed to sell the house to us!” Lauren yelled frantically at the police.
“We have all the official paperwork signed right here!”
Mr. Harris confidently snatched the manila folder directly from the suited man’s trembling hands.
He opened it and quickly scanned the heavily forged signatures.
“This is a blatantly forged power of attorney, Mr. Sterling,” Mr. Harris noted coldly.
“And as a supposedly licensed notary, you are officially looking at ten years in federal prison for authenticating it.”
The suited man, Mr. Sterling, aggressively threw his hands up in complete surrender.
“I had absolutely no idea they forged it!” he cried pathetically.
“They actively promised me fifty thousand dollars under the table to rush the quick sale!”
Daniel stared at the ground, completely unable to look me in the eye.
“Is that entirely true, Daniel?” I asked, my voice cracking slightly with absolute heartbreak.
He didn't answer, but Lauren aggressively stepped forward, her eyes blazing with pure hatred.
“You are a selfish, hoarding old woman, Rachel!” Lauren screamed loudly.
“You live alone in a massive, expensive house while your only son is struggling to pay his basic rent!”
“We absolutely deserve this house more than you do!”
The lead police officer aggressively grabbed Lauren by the arm, spinning her around and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
“Lauren Adams, you are officially under arrest for major fraud and attempted grand larceny,” the officer stated clearly.
Daniel finally looked up, entirely panicked as they aggressively dragged his wife toward the cruiser.
“Mom, please, you have to stop them!” Daniel begged, falling pathetically to his knees on the concrete.
“We were just heavily desperate, I am so deeply sorry!”
I looked down at the boy I had lovingly raised, feeling a sudden, agonizing wave of pure grief.
Before I could even answer, a massive, black SUV aggressively pulled into the driveway, completely blocking the police cruisers.
The tinted window slowly rolled down, revealing a severe, terrifyingly powerful woman wearing a sharp white suit.
She looked directly at Daniel with utter, terrifying disgust.

“You failed to secure the property, Daniel,” the woman stated coldly.
“And my powerful corporation does absolutely not tolerate massive incompetence.”
