Chapter 4 - The Lake House Clue

The heavy police cruiser violently skidded across the wet asphalt and crashed incredibly hard into a massive concrete barrier. The deafening sound of crunching metal completely echoed into the stormy night as the airbags deployed with massive explosive force. I miraculously survived the brutal impact, although my ribs burned with absolute agony from the tight pressure of the seatbelt. I looked through the shattered plastic partition and saw Cousin Ray completely unconscious and bleeding softly over the steering wheel. I squeezed my arms awkwardly beneath my legs, bringing my handcuffed wrists entirely from behind my back to the front of my body. I frantically searched Ray's tactical utility belt and successfully found the small silver key needed to unlock the heavy steel cuffs. I aggressively kicked the damaged rear door open and tumbled heavily out into the freezing, relentless midnight rain. I knew I could not call the local police because my own mother possessed massive financial power and corrupt connections inside the department. I ran blindly through the dark, muddy woods until I reached a small, remote gas station heavily hidden on the edge of the highway. I used a muddy, broken payphone to frantically call Marcus, a highly ruthless defense attorney and my absolute oldest childhood friend. Marcus answered immediately, and I rapidly explained the entire terrifying nightmare regarding the stolen trust fund and my tortured wife. He strictly ordered me to stay completely hidden in the dark shadows while he drove his fast sports car to come rescue me. Twenty agonizing minutes later, Marcus pulled his sleek black sedan behind the gas station and aggressively shoved the passenger door completely open. I jumped inside the warm car, shivering violently as the heavy, freezing rain dripped heavily from my ruined clothes. Marcus immediately handed me a loaded black handgun and a thick, highly confidential legal file he had just pulled from his private database. He gravely revealed that he had just uncovered the ultimate, terrifying truth about the evil woman I had always called my mother. She was not biologically related to me at all, but rather a ruthless con artist named Martha who had completely stolen my real mother's identity. Marcus showed me a faded newspaper clipping detailing the mysterious, brutally unsolved murder of my actual biological mother over thirty years ago. My blood ran entirely cold as I realized my pregnant wife was currently trapped alone with a highly experienced, cold-blooded serial killer. Marcus handed me his glowing cell phone, showing a live GPS tracker hidden inside my wife's digital watch that was rapidly moving toward an isolated lake.
