Chapter 7 - The Final Deadline

Evelyn dropped the smoking gun onto the floor, staring in absolute horror at Daniel's bleeding shoulder.

She hadn't killed him, but the precisely aimed bullet had completely shattered his right collarbone, rendering him entirely useless.

Patricia screamed hysterically, crawling desperately across the shattered glass to reach her wounded, pathetic son.

"Do not move a single muscle, or I will pick that gun right back up," I warned Patricia, my voice raspy but fiercely commanding.

I slowly stood up, brushing the tiny shards of glass off my heavy winter coat as police sirens began wailing loudly outside.

Within seconds, heavily armed tactical officers aggressively breached the front door, flooding the apartment with bright tactical lights.

They quickly secured Daniel and Patricia in heavy steel handcuffs, violently dragging them out of the luxurious penthouse.

Evelyn immediately surrendered to the arresting officers, sobbing quietly as she confessed her entire involvement in the massive fraud.

I rode in the back of a silent police cruiser straight to the hospital, completely exhausted but overwhelmingly triumphant.

We had all the recorded confessions, the physical evidence, and the brutal accomplices safely locked away in custody.

The fraudulent real estate sale was completely invalidated, and Emily's massive trust fund was perfectly secure.

I rushed back into Emily's private hospital room, eager to deliver the incredible, life-changing news to my brave daughter.

The hospital bed was neatly made, the heavy blankets folded perfectly at the foot of the empty mattress.

The IV bags were completely disconnected, lying abandoned and dripping slowly onto the sterile linoleum floor.

I frantically grabbed the nearest passing nurse by the arm, my heart hammering violently in my chest.

"Where is my daughter, where is Emily Lawson?" I demanded, my voice rising in pure, unadulterated panic.

The young nurse looked at her medical chart, her face completely calm and entirely confused by my aggressive reaction.

"She was officially discharged twenty minutes ago by her primary care physician," the nurse explained politely.

"Her doctor signed the release paperwork and personally escorted her down to a private medical transport van."

I felt a massive, suffocating wave of pure terror wash over my entire body.

We had focused entirely on Daniel, Patricia, and Evelyn, completely forgetting that they couldn't have pulled this off alone.

Daniel had aggressively poisoned her for months, which meant he absolutely needed a corrupt doctor to falsify her medical records.

The doctor hadn't just discharged her; he had actively kidnapped her to use as the ultimate bargaining chip.

My cell phone buzzed aggressively in my pocket, displaying an unknown, blocked caller ID.

I answered it with a trembling hand, praying to God that my beautiful daughter was still alive.

"You have precisely one hour to completely drop all criminal charges and release Daniel," an icy, unfamiliar male voice demanded.

May you like

"If he isn't walking out of that police station a free man, your precious daughter is going to suffer a tragic, fatal heart attack."

Before I could even scream a reply, the terrifying phone call abruptly and permanently disconnected.
