Chapter 5 - The Confession

Evelyn’s pale face completely shattered as she realized the massive, undeniable mistake she had just made.

She stumbled backward, practically collapsing onto her expensive white leather sofa.

"Daniel swore to me that he had all the dates perfectly aligned," she panicked, her voice trembling violently.

I took a highly intimidating step forward, towering over my pathetic, greedy sister.

"Daniel is a ruthless sociopath who is going to let you take the entire fall for this massive federal crime," I told her firmly.

"The police already have an audio recording of his mother plotting the fraud, and they know about the arsenic."

Evelyn gasped loudly, covering her mouth with her manicured hands in pure, unadulterated shock.

"He promised me he was just going to heavily drug her so she would be declared legally incompetent," Evelyn cried desperately.

"I never agreed to let him slowly poison her to death, I swear to God!"

I stared at her with absolute, unwavering disgust, recording every single horrifying word on my hidden microphone.

"You sold your only niece's beautiful life for a pathetic slice of her inheritance," I spat angrily.

Evelyn began sobbing uncontrollably, realizing her luxurious lifestyle was about to violently transform into a federal prison cell.

"I will testify against Daniel and Patricia in court," she pleaded desperately, grabbing the edge of my winter coat.

"I will sign a sworn affidavit admitting the signature was forged if you just promise to keep me out of prison."

I coldly pulled my coat away from her desperate, pathetic grasp.

"I don't make deals with monsters, Evelyn," I said, turning to walk out of the apartment.

"The police are waiting in the lobby downstairs, and they have already heard this entire recorded confession."

As I proudly walked toward the apartment door, my cell phone suddenly buzzed violently in my pocket.

It was Vance, the private investigator, calling on our secure, encrypted line.

"Rebecca, you need to get out of that apartment right now," Vance yelled frantically into my ear.

"I just hacked into the building's security cameras, and Daniel is currently riding the elevator up to your floor."

My heart hammered aggressively against my ribs as I looked wildly around the luxurious penthouse for an exit.

"He is heavily armed, Rebecca, and he is not walking away without his money," Vance warned me darkly.

I heard the distinct, terrifying ding of the elevator arriving at the end of the quiet hallway.

I quickly grabbed Evelyn by her silk robe and dragged her forcefully toward the back master bedroom.

"Daniel is here to kill you to tie up his loose ends," I whispered harshly, shoving her into the large walk-in closet.

I locked the heavy bedroom door just as the front door of the apartment violently kicked open.

Heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed loudly against the hardwood floor of the living room.

"I know you are in here, Rebecca," Daniel's sinister voice called out through the silent apartment.

I quietly opened the sliding glass door leading out to the freezing, incredibly high penthouse balcony.

I stepped out into the freezing wind, praying the police would arrive before he found my hiding spot.

Suddenly, the glass door slammed shut behind me, and the heavy metal lock clicked loudly into place.

I spun around to see Patricia standing safely inside the warm apartment, smiling wickedly at me through the thick glass.
