Chapter 6 - The Burner Phone

I sprinted across the hospital room and lunged out the open window into the pouring rain.

The fake doctor was already scrambling down the rusty metal fire escape toward the dark alleyway below.

I climbed out into the storm and chased him recklessly down the slippery iron stairs.

The man jumped the last ten feet into the muddy alley and sprinted toward a waiting black sedan.

I drew my pistol and fired a single warning shot directly into the rear tire of the getaway car.

The tire exploded loudly, causing the heavy vehicle to swerve and crash violently into a brick wall.

I ran up to the shattered window with my weapon raised, fully ready to execute the assassin.

The driver was slumped over the steering wheel, completely unconscious from the brutal impact.

I ripped the fake surgical mask off his bloody face to reveal his true identity.

It was the head of my own private security firm, the man I trusted to guard my life.

I searched his tactical vest and found a cheap disposable burner phone buzzing relentlessly in his pocket.

I answered the call without saying a word, listening closely to the voice on the other end.

A heavily distorted voice demanded to know if Rose and the billionaire were finally dead.

I recognized the slight, arrogant stutter in the caller's disguised voice immediately.

It was my trusted lawyer, Marcus, who was currently guarding my wife and children back at the lab.
