Chapter 2 - The Bloody Raincoat

I did not say a word to Marcus or Mrs. Harlow as I quietly slipped my loaded pistol from my desk drawer.

I crept up the grand sweeping staircase of the estate with my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

The hallway was entirely silent except for the muffled sound of the storm raging outside the windows.

I gently pushed open the heavy mahogany door to the master bedroom.

Evelyn was lying under the thick silk covers exactly where I had left her two hours ago.

Her chest rose and fell in a slow, peaceful rhythm that suggested deep sleep.

I kept my weapon lowered but walked directly toward her massive walk-in closet.

I pushed the sliding wooden doors aside and frantically searched through her designer clothing.

Hidden in the very back corner behind a row of winter coats was a bright yellow raincoat.

The fabric was completely soaked with fresh rainwater and smeared with dark mud.

I reached into the deep pocket of the wet coat and pulled out a crumpled hospital wristband.

The wristband had my exact security password printed clearly across the barcode.

I turned around to confront the woman I thought I loved.

Evelyn was no longer sleeping in the bed.

She was standing directly behind me with a heavy iron fire poker gripped tightly in both hands.
