Chapter 1 - The Enemy Upstairs

I stared at the faded ink on the heavy parchment paper.

The handwriting was elegant and completely unmistakable.

It belonged to my supposedly dead fiancée, Catherine.

She had perished in a horrific plane crash exactly twelve years ago.

My hands shook uncontrollably as I looked from the letter to the crying infant resting on the sofa.

My lawyer, Marcus, burst through the front door shivering heavily from the relentless rain.

I handed him the sealed envelope without saying a single word.

Marcus read the handwritten note and all the color immediately drained from his face.

He whispered that someone must have violently breached the secure clinic archives to obtain this data.

I told him to lock the front iron gate and immediately call my private security team.

While he dialed his phone with trembling fingers, I pulled up the estate's surveillance footage on my digital tablet.

I desperately needed to see who had abandoned my biological child by the dumpsters in a storm.

I quickly rewound the high-definition camera feed to exactly twenty minutes ago.

A dark figure wearing a bright yellow raincoat appeared on the screen carrying a black trash bag.

The figure paused by the dumpsters and looked directly up at the camera lens for a fraction of a second.

My blood instantly turned to absolute ice.

The woman on the screen was Evelyn, my beautiful and incredibly supportive wife of five years.

And she was supposedly sleeping comfortably in our master bedroom right upstairs.
