Chapter 8 - The Ghost from the Past

I stared at the dashboard screen in absolute disbelief as my mother's voice echoed again.
She coldly ordered Leo to terminate me as soon as he obtained the encrypted drive.
I reached over and ended the call with a violently shaking hand.
My entire world shattered as I realized my mother had completely faked her own death.
She was not an innocent helpless informant working for Julian at all.
She was the ruthless brilliant architect of the corrupt empire Julian had been trying to destroy.
Julian had married me to legally shield me from her control and give me the weapons to fight back.
Leo looked at me with deep genuine sympathy and gently pushed the barrel of my gun away.
He promised that he hated my mother just as much as Julian did.
He told me she was hosting a massive charity gala tonight to launder billions of dollars.
If we could plug the hard drive into her private network we could expose everything to the FBI.
I wiped the tears from my face and agreed to finish what Julian had started.
Leo drove us to a luxury hotel downtown and provided me with an elegant evening gown from his stash.
We infiltrated the glittering ballroom by blending perfectly in with the wealthy criminal elite.
I spotted my mother standing on the grand staircase wearing diamonds and a cruel smile.
We slowly made our way toward the secure security room located behind the main stage.
Just as we reached the heavy mahogany doors a dozen armed guards surrounded us completely.
My mother stepped through the crowd and looked at me with completely empty dead eyes.
She expressed deep disappointment in my choices and forcefully took the green backpack from my shoulder.

She ordered her guards to drag us down to the soundproof basement immediately.
My mother turned to her lead enforcer and calmly ordered him to execute Leo in front of me.
