Chapter 7 - The Double Cross

I stared at the black serpent tattoo on Leo's wrist while my heart hammered against my ribs.
I carefully looked away and pretended to casually stare out the passenger window.
I knew I had to act completely normal or he would execute me right here in the moving car.
I slowly reached my right hand into the open zipper of the green backpack.
My fingers wrapped tightly around the cold heavy handle of the loaded handgun.
Leo casually asked me if I had managed to grab the encrypted hard drive from the warehouse.
I lied smoothly and told him the drive was safely tucked inside my yellow sweater pocket.
He smiled a cold fake smile and turned the vehicle down an abandoned industrial road.
I waited until he slowed down for a sharp curve before making my desperate move.
I pulled the gun from the bag and pressed the barrel hard against his ribs.
I ordered him to stop the car immediately and keep his hands clearly on the steering wheel.
Leo looked completely shocked but he slowly pressed his heavy boot on the brake pedal.
I demanded to know why he had a notorious syndicate tattoo permanently inked on his wrist.
Leo let out a heavy sigh and kept his hands perfectly still in the air.
He explained that the tattoo was absolutely mandatory for infiltrating the highest ranks of the organization.
He swore he was truly on Julian's side and was risking everything to protect me.
Before I could decide whether to believe him his secure satellite phone began to ring.
The caller ID on the glowing dashboard screen displayed a restricted top-tier number.
I ordered Leo to answer the call on speakerphone so I could hear every single word.
He pressed the button and a woman's voice echoed through the quiet cabin.
The woman demanded to know if Leo had secured her daughter and the hard drive yet.

The gun shook violently in my hand as the air entirely left my lungs.
The ruthless leader of the syndicate giving the orders was my deceased mother.
