Chapter 10 - The Last Vow

My mother kept the silver revolver aimed perfectly at my head without trembling at all.
She mocked my foolish attempt to outsmart the massive empire she had built from scratch.
I looked at the frozen progress bar and then directly into her cold unforgiving eyes.
I told her she always underestimated the people who actually loved her.
Julian knew she had upgraded the security system to require a biological signature from her bloodline.
That was exactly why he had married me in that quiet lonely hospital room.
I leaned forward and pressed my right eye against the glowing retinal scanner on the console.
The computer chimed loudly as it recognized the distinct genetic markers passed down from my mother.
Because I was her biological daughter the system accepted my biometric signature as a valid override.
The progress bar hit one hundred percent and the screen flashed a brilliant green.
The massive vault of encrypted data was instantly transmitted to every federal agency in the country.
My mother screamed in absolute fury and pulled the heavy trigger of her revolver.
Leo tackled her hard to the ground just before the bullet could strike my chest.
The heavy basement doors burst open as heavily armed federal agents flooded the room.
They dragged my screaming mother away in handcuffs as her criminal empire completely crumbled into dust.
Leo and I walked out of the luxury hotel and breathed in the crisp clean night air.
The green backpack still held enough clean cash to start an entirely new life far away.
We decided to move to a quiet beautiful coastal town where absolutely no one knew our real names.
Six months later I was finally at peace sitting on the wooden porch of our beach house.
A delivery driver pulled up and handed me a small unmarked brown package.

I cut the tape open and found a shiny new soda can pull tab resting on a typed note.
The note said Julian was very proud of me but the real war had just begun.
