Chapter 4 - The Hidden Safehouse

The subway train screeched loudly as it pulled into the empty concrete station.

The metal doors slid open directly behind me offering a very narrow chance of survival.

The corrupt officer shouted a vicious order for me to freeze and put my hands up.

I threw myself backward into the open train car just as a bullet shattered the glass window.

The doors slid shut immediately and the train accelerated rapidly into the dark tunnel.

I collapsed onto the sticky floor and gasped for air while clutching the green backpack.

My heart beat so wildly I thought it would break right through my ribs.

I realized I could not trust the police or anyone else in this entire city.

The syndicate owned every single person of power and influence.

I opened the leather ledger again and flipped to the very last page.

A specific address was circled in bright red ink with a small handwritten note.

The handwriting perfectly matched Julian's and the note simply said this was my true inheritance.

I rode the train to the desolate edge of the industrial district and slipped out into the shadows.

The address led me to a massive abandoned warehouse near the rotting shipping docks.

The heavy metal door was secured with an advanced digital biometric lock.

I remembered the cheap soda can pull tab Julian had placed on my finger.

I pulled it off and noticed a tiny sophisticated microchip embedded in the aluminum.

I pressed the ring against the glowing scanner and the heavy steel door hissed open.

The interior of the warehouse was not abandoned or empty at all.

It was a highly advanced server room filled with rows of blinking supercomputers.

Massive monitors covered the far wall displaying live surveillance feeds from all over the city.

I walked closer to the screens and my blood ran completely cold in my veins.

One of the live feeds was pointing directly at my apartment building.

I watched in absolute horror as a massive explosion ripped through my living room.

The blast destroyed my entire floor and sent fiery debris raining down onto the street.

They had completely vaporized my home just minutes after I had escaped.

A red digital timer suddenly appeared on the main screen counting down from three minutes.

A mechanical voice announced that the facility purge protocol had been officially activated.
