Chapter 6 - The Invisible Wire

Roman stared at the blinking red light on the wooden table with absolute horror.

Julian had successfully planted a tracking device inside a child's toy.

"How long has he had this bear?" Josephine asked, her voice tight with panic.

"Julian bought it for him at Christmas last year," Roman realized with immense disgust.

"He has been passively tracking my sons for an entire year just waiting for the right moment."

Josephine quickly grabbed a heavy iron hammer from a nearby toolbox and smashed the device.

"Smashing it now will only show Julian our exact final location before the signal died," she warned.

"He already knows we are hiding in this cabin."

Roman rapidly checked the ammunition magazines of the stolen assault rifles.

"We have exactly two weapons and nowhere to run with two small children in this storm."

Josephine stood up and began systematically opening all the kitchen cabinets.

"My old unit specialized in asymmetrical warfare and defensive trap making," she explained.

She grabbed several bottles of heavy cleaning chemicals, some thick wire, and a box of matches.

"If Julian wants to take this cabin, we will make him bleed for every single inch."

Roman helped her quietly move the boys into the reinforced cast-iron bathtub in the bathroom.

He covered them completely with a heavy mattress to protect them from any stray bullets.

For the next hour, Roman and Josephine worked together in perfect, deadly synchronization.

They rigged explosive chemical traps at every window and strung invisible tripwires across the porch.

The intense, shared adrenaline created a heavy, undeniable romantic tension in the small room.

Roman briefly caught her waist to stop her from backing into a sharp table edge.

Josephine looked up into his dark eyes, her breath hitching very slightly in her throat.

"When this is all over, you are legally changing your name and working for me permanently," Roman whispered.

Josephine offered him a small, incredibly sad smile.

"Women like me do not get happy endings, Roman."

Before Roman could argue, a massive explosion rocked the entire front of the cabin.

The front door blew completely inward, sending burning splinters of wood flying everywhere.

Through the thick smoke, a heavily armored man stepped slowly into the living room.

It was not Julian.

It was Roman's missing head of security, Marcus, holding a live grenade.
