Chapter 5 - The Cabin in the Woods

Roman desperately wanted to go after Josephine, but his children were screaming in the backseat.
He provided heavy covering fire out the driver's window to keep the mercenaries pinned down.
The loud sounds of brutal hand-to-hand combat suddenly echoed from the dark trees.
One of the tactical spotlights was violently smashed, plunging half the road back into darkness.
Two agonizing minutes passed with only the sound of heavy rain hitting the metal roof.
Then, the passenger door was yanked open and Josephine climbed back inside.
She was covered entirely in thick mud and fresh blood, carrying two stolen assault rifles.
"Drive the truck right through the tree branches," she commanded breathlessly.
Roman did not ask a single question as he slammed the accelerator straight to the floor.
The heavy truck violently smashed through the weakened branches and cleared the deadly ambush.
They drove another ten miles deep into the mountains until the hidden cabin finally appeared.
It was a small, rustic wooden structure completely concealed by massive pine trees.
They hurried the terrified boys inside and quickly locked the heavy iron deadbolts.
Roman immediately started a fire in the stone hearth to warm his freezing children.
Josephine sat heavily at the kitchen table and began cleaning a massive cut on her cheek.
"You just killed four highly trained mercenaries with your bare hands," Roman noted quietly.
"I used their own knives, actually," Josephine corrected him without any emotion.
Roman poured a glass of cheap whiskey and set it down firmly in front of her.
"You are far too skilled to be a simple, discarded cartel assassin," Roman observed.
Josephine took a long, slow sip of the burning alcohol.
"I was never an assassin for the cartel, Roman," she finally confessed.
"I was the lead tactical instructor for a highly classified military black ops unit."
"I faked my own death five years ago because my commanding officer sold our entire team out."
Roman stared at her, deeply captivated by the beautiful, dangerous woman sitting in his kitchen.
Suddenly, little Finn walked into the kitchen clutching his favorite stuffed bear.
"Daddy, the red light inside my bear is blinking again," the six-year-old boy said innocently.
Roman felt his blood turn completely to ice in his veins.
He snatched the teddy bear and viciously ripped the back seam wide open.
