Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Code

Josephine looked at the glowing phone screen without showing any visible signs of panic.
"Government databases are hacked and altered all the time, Mr. DeLuca," she said quietly.
Roman grabbed her uninjured arm and pulled her roughly off the examination table.
"Do not play stupid with me when my children's lives are on the line," Roman growled.
"If you are a dead syndicate killer, why are you baking cornbread in my kitchen?"
Before Josephine could formulate another lie, Roman's phone began to vibrate violently in his hand.
He answered the call and put it on speaker for both of them to hear.
"Boss, we found the security breach," his head of cybersecurity announced nervously.
"Tell me exactly how they bypassed the retinal scanners," Roman demanded.
"Someone physically plugged a decryption drive into the main server in the east wing."
Roman felt a cold knot form deep inside his stomach.
The east wing server room was strictly off-limits to everyone except his inner circle.
"Whose personal access code was used to open that server room door?" Roman asked.
The security expert hesitated for a long, agonizing moment on the phone.
"It was Julian's personal code, sir."
Roman felt as if the floor had suddenly dropped out from completely beneath him.
Julian was his late wife's younger brother and Roman's most trusted business lieutenant.
Julian had eaten dinner at their family table just three hours ago.
"Are you absolutely certain about this?" Roman asked, his voice shaking with pure rage.
"Yes sir, and Julian's private helicopter just took off from the city helipad ten minutes ago."
Roman abruptly ended the call and looked back at his mysterious nanny.
"My own brother-in-law just tried to have you murdered in my house," Roman stated.
Josephine finally dropped the innocent act entirely.
Her warm, soft eyes suddenly turned as cold and sharp as shattered glass.
"Julian didn't send those men to kill me, Roman," she corrected him.
"Julian sent those heavily armed men to kill your two sons."
May you like
Roman staggered backward, entirely unable to process the horrific words.
"He needs the boys dead so he can legally inherit your entire empire," Josephine revealed.
