Chapter 9 - The Rescue

Clare burst through the basement doors and ran onto the dark sales floor.
She saw Daniel standing over Amanda’s bleeding body near the mattress display.
She heard the muffled crying coming from the wooden display shed in the garden center.
Clare sprinted past Daniel and desperately pulled at the locked shed door.
She grabbed a heavy steel shovel from a nearby rack and smashed the padlock to pieces.
She threw the door open and collapsed to her knees.
Lily was huddled in the corner, her hands bound with zip ties, but she was alive.
Clare pulled her daughter into a fierce, desperate embrace, sobbing uncontrollably.
Lily cried into her mother’s shoulder, terrified but safe.
Daniel stood guard over Amanda, watching the emotional reunion with a heavy heart.
He reached into his coat, pulled out his secure satellite phone, and called the FBI director directly.
Within ten minutes, the sound of federal sirens completely surrounded the retail store.
Heavily armed FBI agents flooded the building, securing the perimeter and arresting the remaining mercenaries.
Paramedics rushed in, tending to Lily’s minor cuts and Amanda’s severe shoulder wound.
The lead FBI agent approached Daniel, demanding the encrypted flash drive.
Clare handed it over, providing Lily’s memorized poem to finally unlock the files.
The agent plugged it into a secure tablet, confirming it contained the complete syndicate ledger.
He thanked Daniel, stating they had enough evidence to put Amanda away for life.
The agent assured Clare that her husband’s murder would finally be brought to justice.
Daniel walked Clare and Lily out into the freezing light of the early morning.
The nightmare was finally over.
Daniel looked at Clare, his hardened exterior finally melting away completely.
He promised that neither of them would ever have to worry about anything again.

He told Clare he was going to take care of her and Lily for the rest of their lives.
Clare smiled, feeling truly safe for the first time in two terrible years.
