Chapter 7 - The Hunt

Clare screamed her daughter's name into the empty security office.

She ran to the bloody air vent and desperately tried to shine her phone light inside.

The narrow metal shaft was completely empty.

Daniel pulled her back, his face tight with controlled panic.

He told her that Richard had not sent all of his men to the front of the store.

Someone had flanked the security room while they were distracted by the intercom.

Daniel grabbed Richard by the throat and slammed him against the wall monitors.

He demanded to know who else was operating inside the building.

Richard coughed up blood and smiled a gruesome, broken smile.

He whispered that the true architect of the company’s corruption was never him.

He was just a regional manager playing a small part in a massive global syndicate.

Before Richard could reveal a name, a sniper bullet shattered the reinforced glass of the security booth.

The high-caliber round struck Richard directly in the forehead, killing him instantly.

Daniel tackled Clare to the floor as more bullets ripped through the expensive monitors.

He realized the sniper was positioned on the interior catwalk near the ceiling warehouse racks.

Daniel pulled Clare into the dark hallway leading to the employee breakroom.

He told her she needed to trust him completely if they were going to survive the next ten minutes.

He handed her the silver flash drive and told her to run to the main electrical panel.

He instructed her to cut all power to the building on his exact mark.

Clare refused to leave him alone to fight a sniper in the dark.

Daniel grabbed her shoulders, his eyes fierce and unyielding.

He promised her on his life that he would bring Lily back to her.

Clare reluctantly took the drive and sprinted down the dark hallway toward the basement stairs.

Daniel stepped back out onto the sales floor, intentionally drawing the sniper’s fire.

He shouted into the darkness, asking the assassin to show his face.

The sniper laughed from the catwalk above, a voice that echoed coldly through the store.

The voice told Daniel that he was always too trusting of the people closest to him.
