Chapter 6 - The Intercom
Richard froze, staring up at the ceiling speakers in absolute shock.
He demanded to know how the little girl had gotten into the security office.
Clare realized Lily had not stayed in the locked truck as instructed.
Her brilliant daughter had remembered the secret entrance to the security booth Clare had shown her years ago.
Lily’s voice echoed through the store again, sounding terrified but incredibly brave.
She told Richard that her father had made her memorize a poem before he died.
She said the poem was the password, but she would only type it in if her mother was let go.
Richard laughed, a cruel and dismissive sound.
He ordered five of his armed guards to breach the security room and drag the brat out.
The men jogged toward the back of the store, their boots squeaking on the clean floor.
Daniel looked at Clare and gave her a nearly imperceptible nod.
He had deliberately let himself be captured to draw Richard out into the open.
As the guards reached the security doors, Daniel pressed a hidden button on his stolen watch.
He had rigged the mercenary’s abandoned radio with a massive feedback loop.
A deafening, ear-shattering screech erupted from every single speaker in the massive store.
The armed men dropped their weapons and clutched their bleeding ears in agony.
Daniel swept Richard’s legs out from under him, sending the manager crashing to the floor.
Clare scrambled backward, grabbing her dropped pistol from the linoleum.
She aimed it directly at Richard’s chest as Daniel secured the silver flash drive.
Daniel ordered the groaning mercenaries to stay exactly where they were.
He grabbed Richard by the collar and dragged him toward the security office to get Lily.
They burst through the heavy door, expecting to find the little girl hiding under the desk.
But the security office was completely empty.

The microphone was still active on the desk, but Lily was nowhere to be seen.
A trail of fresh blood led from the chair directly toward an open air vent in the wall.
