Chapter 4 - The Tracking Device

Daniel reached up and touched the back of his coat collar.
His fingers brushed against a small, magnetic tracking device the size of a coin.
He ripped it off and threw it out the shattered car window into the muddy grass.
He cursed loudly, realizing the assassins had tagged him at the diner before the explosion.
He told Clare they had exactly two minutes before the tactical teams descended on the barn.
They abandoned the sedan and ran into the dense, freezing woods behind the property.
The sound of heavy helicopter rotors suddenly chopped through the night air above them.
A massive spotlight swept across the barren winter trees, hunting for their movement.
Daniel pulled Clare and Lily under the thick roots of an overturned oak tree.
He pressed his finger to his lips, silently urging them to stay absolutely still.
Boots crunched on the wet leaves just a few yards away.
A mercenary with a suppressed rifle walked slowly past their hiding spot.
Daniel waited until the man turned his back.
He surged out from under the roots with terrifying speed and lethal precision.
He snapped the mercenary’s neck before the man could make a single sound.
Clare covered Lily’s eyes, horrified by the violent reality of the man she had just fed stuffing to.
Daniel grabbed the dead man’s rifle and checked the magazine.
He whispered that his corporate career was just his second act in life.
He had spent twenty years in military special operations before founding his company.
He handed Clare a heavy pistol he pulled from the mercenary’s tactical vest.
He told her she was going to have to fight if she wanted her daughter to live.
Clare gripped the cold steel, a fierce maternal rage finally replacing her fear.
Daniel said they needed to get to the Franklin store immediately.
He knew exactly where Mark had hidden the flash drive two years ago.
It was hidden inside the massive corporate server room behind her customer service desk.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through a megaphone from the edge of the woods.
May you like
The voice belonged to Richard, the store manager Clare had worked under for six years.
Richard announced that he had already found the drive, and he was waiting for them at the store.
