Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Three weeks later, the chaos had completely settled into a peaceful new reality.

The FBI had successfully dismantled the entire money laundering syndicate.

Amanda and dozens of corrupt corporate executives were sitting in federal prison.

Daniel had publicly cleared his name and stabilized his massive retail empire.

He had promoted Clare to a newly created position as Vice President of Operations.

He had also established a massive, unbreakable college trust fund for Lily.

It was Christmas Eve, and Daniel had invited them to his sprawling, snowy estate for a private dinner.

The mansion was decorated beautifully, warm light spilling from every massive window.

Lily was happily playing with a new puppy in the grand living room by the fire.

Daniel led Clare into his luxurious private office to pour them a glass of expensive wine.

The tension of the past month was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, undeniable connection.

Daniel gently pulled Clare into his arms and kissed her deeply.

It felt like the perfect ending to a horrific fairytale.

Daniel excused himself to check on the dinner roasting in the kitchen oven.

Clare smiled and leaned against his massive mahogany desk, feeling incredibly lucky.

She reached across the desk to grab a napkin, accidentally bumping his computer mouse.

The large desktop monitor immediately woke up from sleep mode.

An encrypted email draft was left open on the glowing screen, waiting to be sent.

Clare glanced at it, expecting to see boring corporate numbers or holiday greetings.

The email was addressed to a private offshore banking firm in the Cayman Islands.

It contained instructions to transfer five hundred million dollars into a hidden account.

But the terrifying part was the signature authorizing the massive, illegal transfer.

It wasn't signed by Daniel Mercer.

The email was signed by Mark Bennett, Clare's supposedly dead husband, confirming he was still alive and running the real syndicate.
