Chapter 8 - The Desperate Stand

The lively chatter of the grand ballroom instantly transformed into a chorus of terrified screams.
Wealthy investors dropped their champagne glasses and dove behind heavily decorated tables for cover.
My undercover security team immediately drew their concealed weapons, aiming red laser sights at Brooke’s chest.
Brooke ignored the lasers, her eyes wild and bloodshot, completely consumed by a desperate, manic rage.
She screamed that I had ruined her life by freezing the offshore accounts and trapping her in the city.
She blamed me for Julian abandoning her at the hospital and taking the twins to an undisclosed location.
Arthur cowered behind the cocktail table, using the legal documents as a pathetic shield against the escalating violence.
I stood perfectly still, keeping my hands visible and my eyes locked onto Brooke’s trembling finger on the trigger.
I calmly told her that shooting me in a room full of federal agents and witnesses would not bring her babies back.
I promised her that if she put the gun down, I would help her find Julian and get her children out of the country safely.
Brooke let out a hysterical, broken laugh, tears streaming down her pale, exhausted face.
She yelled that Julian was not the one who took the babies from the maternity ward.
She revealed that the cartel had kidnapped the twins to force Arthur to pay off his massive gambling debts.
Arthur gasped loudly from the floor, his face turning a sickening shade of gray as the truth finally struck him.
The dangerous syndicate he had hired to kill me had realized he was completely broke and turned on him instead.
Brooke pointed the silver handgun away from me and aimed it directly at Arthur's head.
She demanded that Arthur transfer the five million dollar life insurance payout to the cartel immediately, or she would pull the trigger.
Arthur sobbed uncontrollably, admitting that the insurance policy was voided the moment I found out about the embezzlement.
He confessed that there was absolutely no money left to save the twins or pay off the dangerous criminals.
Brooke’s face shattered into absolute despair as she realized her children were entirely doomed because of his greed.
She slowly lowered the weapon, falling to her knees on the marble floor and sobbing into her empty hands.
My security team rushed forward, swiftly kicking the gun away and pinning Brooke to the ground.
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as the real police rushed to the hotel.
I looked down at Arthur, who was still curled into a pathetic ball, weeping like a helpless child.
I picked up the dropped pen and forced it into his trembling fingers, demanding his signature on the corporate transfer.
He quickly signed every single page, legally stripping himself of any remaining power or wealth.
I snatched the documents back just as the police stormed into the ballroom with their weapons drawn.
The officers dragged Arthur and Brooke away in shiny steel handcuffs, reading them their Miranda rights.
I took a deep breath, believing the worst nightmare of my life was finally over.

Then, my lead security officer approached me with a grim expression, holding a ringing burner phone found in Brooke's pocket.
He whispered that the caller ID simply read, "The Cartel," and they wanted to speak with the wife.
