Chapter 2 - The Frozen Assets

The morning sun crept through the large windows of my empty dining room.

I sat at the head of the long oak table, calmly sipping a fresh cup of dark roast coffee.

The signed divorce papers were neatly stacked in a pristine manila envelope, ready for my attorney.

I felt an incredible sense of peace, a quiet power that I had not experienced in over twelve years.

At exactly eight in the morning, my phone began to vibrate violently across the smooth wood.

The caller ID flashed with the name of my lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance.

I answered the call, asking him if the emergency preservation orders had been filed with the courts.

Marcus confirmed that every single bank account tied to Arthur's name had been completely frozen.

He also informed me that the fake consulting business registered to Brooke's cousin was currently under investigation.

I smiled, thanking Marcus for his rapid response and flawless execution of our legal trap.

My celebration was cut short when a sudden wave of frantic knocking rattled my heavy oak front door.

I did not have to guess who was standing on the other side of the frosted glass.

I walked to the entryway and opened the door to find Arthur looking like a wild animal cornered in an alley.

His expensive designer suit was deeply wrinkled, and his hair was a chaotic, tangled mess.

He pushed his way into the foyer, demanding to know why his credit cards were declining at the hospital.

He screamed that his access codes to the offshore accounts had been completely wiped out.

I crossed my arms and stared at him with eyes as cold as absolute zero.

I told him that the money he had stolen from my company was safely returning to its rightful owner.

Arthur began to hyperventilate, pacing back and forth across the marble floor of the foyer.

He begged me to give him access to just one account, claiming he needed to pay for the twins' medical bills.

I leaned against the wall and casually informed him that the biological father should be the one paying those bills.

Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror.

He realized in that exact moment that I had known his devastating medical secret the entire time.

Before he could formulate a desperate lie, my attorney Marcus spoke through the phone I had left on speaker.

Marcus announced that he had just uncovered another hidden file in Arthur's corporate office.

It was a freshly minted life insurance policy taken out in my name.

Arthur had forged my signature to guarantee himself a five million dollar payout in the event of my sudden death.
