Chapter 4 - The Intruder

The sound of shattering glass sent a violent jolt of adrenaline straight through my veins.

I slammed the laptop shut and grabbed the heavy bronze letter opener resting on my desk.

My heart hammered relentlessly against my chest as I crept silently toward the hallway.

I expected to see Arthur returning in a fit of desperate, drug-fueled rage to silence me for good.

Instead, a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt was standing in the middle of my kitchen.

He was casually inspecting the broken glass on the floor with the toe of his heavy leather boot.

He did not look like a random burglar, and he certainly did not look like Arthur.

I tightened my grip on the bronze weapon and demanded to know who he was and what he wanted.

The man slowly turned around, pulling back his hood to reveal a face that made my blood run cold.

It was Julian, Arthur's estranged younger brother who had been banished from the family over ten years ago.

Julian smiled, a twisted, charming grin that perfectly mirrored his older brother's deceptive nature.

He raised both of his hands in the air to show me that he was completely unarmed.

He calmly apologized for the broken door, claiming it was the only way to ensure we were not being monitored.

I told him he had exactly ten seconds to explain himself before I pressed the panic button on my alarm system.

Julian walked over to the kitchen island and placed a thick manila folder on the marble surface.

He revealed that he was the biological father of Brooke's newborn twins.

He confessed that he and Brooke had been having a secret affair for the past three years right under Arthur's nose.

Julian explained that they had orchestrated the entire pregnancy to trap Arthur into draining my company's assets.

I stared at him in disbelief, utterly disgusted by the depravity of his master plan.

I asked him why he was betraying Brooke now if they had plotted this elaborate heist together.

Julian let out a dark, humorless laugh that echoed off the high ceilings of my kitchen.

He told me that Brooke had double-crossed him by funneling the stolen eight hundred thousand dollars into a private offshore account.

She was planning to flee the country with Arthur as her oblivious babysitter, leaving Julian completely empty-handed.

Julian slid the thick folder across the marble island toward me.

He offered to give me every single piece of evidence needed to send both Arthur and Brooke to federal prison.

He only wanted one thing in return for his devastating cooperation.

He wanted my help to legally steal the twins away from Brooke forever.

I reached for the folder, but Julian suddenly grabbed my wrist with a grip like iron.

He whispered that if I betrayed him, the cartel debt Brooke owed would become my problem.
