Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Elias stared at the security monitor in absolute disbelief.

The man who had stood by his side for a decade had completely sold him out to the enemy.

Marcus was the only person who knew the precise location of this emergency bunker.

Nakia noticed the color drain from Elias's face and asked what was wrong.

He calmly turned around and told her that they had to leave the room immediately.

Before she could ask why, a massive explosion rocked the concrete foundation of the safehouse.

The heavy steel door of the bunker buckled inward, groaning under the immense pressure.

Elias grabbed Nakia's hand and pulled her toward a hidden maintenance hatch in the floor.

He keyed in a rapid passcode, and the heavy metal grate swung open to reveal a dark service tunnel.

They climbed down into the pitch-black shaft just as the bunker door finally gave way.

Gunfire echoed above them, bullets sparking against the metal ladder as Marcus's men flooded the room.

Elias led Nakia through the damp, narrow tunnel beneath the city streets.

He explained that Marcus must have intercepted his background check on Alexei and used it to set this entire trap.

Nakia fought back tears, her entire normal life completely destroyed in a matter of hours.

She asked him where they could possibly go if his own men were actively hunting him.

Elias admitted that his resources were frozen and his empire was compromised.

He needed a place that was completely off the grid, a place Marcus knew absolutely nothing about.

Nakia took a deep, trembling breath and told him she knew exactly where to go.

She led him through the sewer system until they emerged near a deserted train yard.

They stole an old, rusted pickup truck that had been left idling near the tracks.

Nakia took the wheel, driving them toward the impoverished south side of the city.

She pulled up to a dilapidated, boarded-up auto repair shop hidden in a dark alleyway.

She explained that her estranged father used to own the shop before he passed away.

Elias nodded, impressed by her quick thinking and surprising resilience under fire.

He pushed the heavy garage door open, expecting to find a dusty, empty sanctuary.

Instead, the harsh glare of a tactical flashlight hit him directly in the eyes.

Standing in the center of the dark garage, holding a loaded shotgun, was Alexei.
