Chapter 10 - The New Partner
The underground doctor rushed out of the van and immediately loaded Elias onto a stretcher.
They sped through the city streets toward a hidden surgical suite beneath a legitimate private clinic.
Nakia paced the waiting room for six agonizing hours, her clothes covered in dirt and blood.
The doctor finally emerged, pulling down his surgical mask with a tired, reassuring smile.
He told her that Elias had lost a massive amount of blood, but he was going to survive.
Nakia rushed into the recovery room and found Elias awake, looking pale but entirely alive.
He smiled weakly when he saw her, reaching his hand out to pull her close to his bed.
She sat carefully on the edge of the mattress and leaned her head gently against his chest.
Elias told her that his empire was currently in ruins, but he was going to rebuild it from the ground up.
He asked her if she wanted to take her severance pay and disappear to a safe, normal life.
Nakia looked into his dark, loving eyes and shook her head with absolute certainty.
She told him she was officially resigning from her position as his housekeeper.
Instead, she was going to stay by his side as his full partner in both life and business.
Elias smiled, feeling a profound, overwhelming sense of happiness he had never known before.
They held each other tightly, finally feeling completely safe after the most terrifying night of their lives.
Two weeks later, Nakia walked down to the secure lobby of their new temporary penthouse to retrieve the mail.
She sorted through the letters and found a heavy, black envelope addressed to her true birth name.
It was a name she had completely buried ten years ago to escape her own dark past.
