Chapter 3 - The Safehouse

Elias roared in absolute fury, ignoring the agonizing pain in his ribs.
He lunged forward, drawing a hidden combat knife from his ankle sheath.
He drove the blade deeply into the attacker's thigh, forcing the man to drop Nakia onto the wet pavement.
Elias grabbed Nakia by the waist and dragged her to the safety of his armored car.
He threw her into the passenger seat, jumped behind the wheel, and slammed on the gas.
The heavy vehicle tore away from the curb, leaving the surviving attackers firing uselessly at his bulletproof rear window.
Nakia was trembling violently, her dark eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
She asked him who those men were and why they were trying to kidnap a simple maid.
Elias gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning pure white.
He confessed that Brendan was actually a scout for a rival mafia family, and the entire date was a calculated trap.
Nakia stared at him, the horrifying reality of her situation finally sinking in.
She realized that the aloof, brooding billionaire she cleaned up after was actually a violent crime lord.
Elias drove them to an unmarked, highly secure safehouse located in an abandoned industrial district.
He parked in the underground garage and led her up to a windowless concrete bunker.
He handed her a clean towel to dry off and poured her a stiff glass of whiskey to calm her nerves.
He promised her that he would deploy his entire syndicate to completely eliminate the Volkov threat tonight.
He pulled out his encrypted phone to call Marcus and initiate the strike team.
The call went straight to a disconnected voicemail tone.
Elias frowned, dialing the emergency backup line for his security detail.
That line was entirely dead as well.
He walked over to the secure laptop sitting on the safehouse desk to check the perimeter cameras.

The screen flickered to life, showing a dozen heavily armed men already surrounding the building.
Leading the assault team was his most trusted intelligence officer, Marcus.
