Chapter 2 - The Street Assault

Alexei froze completely, his hand hovering just inches above his hidden weapon.
Nakia stared at Elias with a mixture of profound confusion and rising anger.
She demanded to know what on earth her boss was doing at her private dinner.
Elias ignored her outrage and kept his dark eyes firmly locked on the Russian scout.
He politely suggested that Brendan should pay the bill and leave the city immediately.
Alexei swallowed hard, nodding slowly as the cold steel pressed harder into his kneecap.
He threw a hundred-dollar bill onto the table, stood up, and rushed out of the restaurant without a single backward glance.
Nakia crossed her arms over her chest, completely furious at the bizarre spectacle.
She told Elias that he had no right to interfere in her personal life just because he paid her salary.
She stood up from the booth, grabbed her purse, and stormed out into the rainy Chicago night.
Elias threw a tip on the table and followed her out, desperate to explain the danger she was in.
He caught up to her on the wet sidewalk, grabbing her gently by the elbow.
She yanked her arm away, yelling that she quit effectively immediately.
Before Elias could tell her about Alexei's true identity, a black panel van screeched to a halt beside them.
The side doors slid open violently, revealing four masked men holding automatic weapons.
Elias reacted with the lethal speed that had made him the most feared man in the city.
He shoved Nakia behind his broad back and drew his weapon in one fluid motion.
He fired twice, dropping the first two masked attackers before they could even aim their rifles.
The remaining men opened fire, shattering the glass windows of the restaurant behind them.
Elias tackled Nakia to the wet pavement, shielding her completely with his own body.
He realized with a sickening jolt that these men were not aiming at him at all.
They were trying to grab Nakia to use as leverage against his empire.

A heavy combat boot suddenly kicked Elias in the ribs, knocking the gun from his hand.
One of the masked men grabbed Nakia by her hair and dragged her toward the open doors of the waiting van.
