Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Safe House

The laser sight remained perfectly steady on Adrian's heart.
The lead mercenary demanded that we drop all our weapons and surrender immediately.
I realized these men did not wear the insignia of Julian’s cartel.
They wore the crest of the High Commission, the absolute ruling council of the global underworld.
The council had sent their elite enforcers to wipe out both the Moretti and Romano families to claim the city.
Adrian pushed me behind him to shield me from the line of fire despite his severe injuries.
He calmly told the mercenaries that they were trespassing on private property.
The leader scoffed and raised his assault rifle to execute us on the spot.
I reached behind the computer desk and slammed my fist onto the emergency lockdown button.
Thick steel shutters slammed down over the windows and the main door abruptly slammed shut.
The descending metal door caught the leader’s rifle and snapped it cleanly in half.
Red emergency lights bathed the room in a bloody glow as the automated defense turrets activated.
The mercenaries scrambled for cover as robotic machine guns opened fire from the ceiling.
Adrian and I used the distraction to grab our tactical bags and escort my mother into the basement tunnel.
The safe house had a secondary escape route that led directly to the city's old subway system.
We hurried down the dark concrete stairs while the sounds of heavy gunfire raged above us.
Adrian was losing blood rapidly and leaned heavily against my shoulder with every step.
My mother carried the baby in a sling and prayed silently for our safe passage.
We reached a rusted iron gate that blocked the entrance to the subway tracks.
I used a heavy crowbar to pry the ancient lock until it finally snapped off.
We stepped onto the abandoned tracks just as a massive explosion rocked the safe house above us.
The High Commission had breached the security room and destroyed the automated defenses.
Flashlights pierced the darkness of the tunnel as the surviving mercenaries pursued us relentlessly.
We ran along the subway tracks until we reached an old maintenance platform.
Adrian collapsed onto a wooden bench and admitted he could not run any further.
He handed me his spare pistol and told me to take our family and leave him behind.
I angrily slapped the gun away and refused to abandon the father of my child.
May you like
I turned to face the tunnel and prepared to make a final stand against the approaching squad.
Suddenly, the roar of an approaching subway train echoed through the underground cavern.
