Chapter 8 - The Wrath of the Last Romano

A cold and terrifying silence settled over the rooftop as Julian’s laughter died away.
I did not scream or cry for the man I had just lost.
The grief was instantly replaced by an ancient fury that flowed through my Romano blood.
I raised my pistol and shot Julian cleanly in his kneecap.
He collapsed to the ground with a pathetic shriek of agony.
I walked toward him with slow and deliberate steps until I stood over his writhing body.
He begged for mercy and promised to give me all the wealth in his hidden accounts.
I coldly informed him that a Romano does not care about dirty money.
I kicked his gun off the roof and pressed the barrel of my weapon against his forehead.
I told him this was justice for my father, my mother, and the man he just murdered.
I pulled the trigger and finally ended the reign of Julian Moretti.
I lowered the gun and stared blankly at the rising sun.
The police sirens were growing deafeningly loud as tactical teams surrounded the building below.
I rushed back down the stairs to find my mother waiting anxiously on the catwalk.
We navigated through the maze of the chemical plant and slipped out through a hidden drainage pipe.
We stole a forgotten maintenance truck and drove away before the police breached the perimeter.
I drove us back to the hidden safe house in complete silence.
My heart felt like a hollow stone locked inside my chest.
We entered the security room and I immediately scooped my baby out of the crib.
I held him tight and silently promised that no one would ever hurt him again.
My mother placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and wept for the sacrifice Adrian had made.
I wiped my dry eyes and began packing our bags to leave the city forever.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the safe house groaned loudly.
I grabbed my gun and aimed it squarely at the entrance.
The door swung open to reveal a battered and bloody figure leaning heavily against the frame.
It was Adrian, bruised and broken, but miraculously alive.
He coughed up blood and explained that he had crashed through a canvas awning that broke his fall.
I dropped my gun and ran across the room to crash into his arms.

Before we could celebrate the miracle, a red laser sight painted a dot on Adrian’s chest.
Five heavily armed mercenaries dressed in black tactical gear stepped out of the shadows behind him.
