Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

The cold steel of Leo’s gun gleamed in the dim fluorescent light of the garage.

I instinctively stepped in front of the wheelchair to block the weapon with my own body.

My baby let out a soft whimper as if sensing the deadly tension in the air.

Adrian gripped the armrests of his chair so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

He demanded to know how long Leo had been working for the cartel that attacked our home.

Leo chuckled darkly and confessed he had been feeding them information for over a year.

He admitted that he was the one who disabled the perimeter alarms tonight.

A deep, animalistic growl rumbled in Adrian’s chest.

He promised Leo that he would skin him alive for threatening our son.

Leo merely shrugged and placed his finger gently on the trigger.

He told Adrian that a crippled boss was no longer fit to run the city.

I knew I only had one chance to save my family.

I slowly raised my empty hands in the air and begged Leo to take me instead of the child.

As Leo shifted his gaze toward my face, I kicked a metal toolbox resting near my feet.

The heavy box crashed into his shins and caused him to stumble backward.

Before he could recover his balance, I lunged forward and twisted his wrist with a brutal combat maneuver.

The gun clattered loudly onto the concrete floor.

Adrian did not hesitate for a single second.

He threw his body out of the wheelchair and tackled the massive bodyguard to the ground.

I scooped up the weapon and pointed it squarely at the traitor's chest.

Leo raised his hands in defeat with a sickening smirk still plastered across his face.

We dragged him to a thick concrete pillar and bound his hands tightly with zip ties from the trunk.

I loaded my baby into the backseat of the SUV and helped Adrian climb into the passenger side.

I slid behind the steering wheel and stomped on the gas pedal.

The armored vehicle smashed through the garage barrier and roared into the rainy night.

Adrian pulled out his secure cell phone to call his remaining loyal men.

The screen lit up with a missed call from the private clinic where my mother was staying.

He dialed the doctor's number with trembling fingers.

A strange man answered the phone and cheerfully announced that my mother was no longer at the hospital.
