Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Moretti Family

The video feed crackled with static as Adrian stared at the face of his deceased brother.
Julian Moretti smiled into the camera with a chilling lack of emotion.
He tilted his head and mocked Adrian for looking so surprised.
Julian explained that he faked his death to build his own empire outside their father's control.
He proudly admitted that he was the mastermind who orchestrated the hit on our mansion tonight.
My mother groaned in the background as one of Julian’s guards roughly pulled her hair.
I screamed into the microphone and begged him not to hurt her.
Julian leaned closer to the camera and whispered that the Romano bloodline had to end.
He gave us exactly two hours to surrender at the old shipping docks before he executed her.
The screen faded to black and left us in suffocating silence.
Adrian slammed his fists into the concrete floor until his knuckles bled.
I knelt beside him and gently wrapped my hands around his shaking fists.
I told him we did not have time to mourn a brother who had become a monster.
We had to form a plan to strike back before the clock ran out.
Adrian slowly stood up and wiped the blood from his hands.
His eyes burned with a terrifying determination I had never seen before.
He walked over to a steel weapons locker and punched in a security code.
The heavy doors swung open to reveal an arsenal of high-tech tactical gear.
We spent the next hour loading magazines and mapping out the blueprints of the shipping docks.
I strapped a ballistic vest over my chest and secured a holster to my thigh.
I looked at my reflection in the dark monitor and finally embraced the legacy of the Romano family.
I was no longer just a desperate surrogate mother trying to pay hospital bills.
I was a mafia princess preparing for war to protect her family.
Adrian kissed my forehead and promised we would all come back alive.
We secured the safe house and left our baby under the watchful eye of a hidden automated defense system.
We drove a stolen sports car through the rain and arrived at the docks with twenty minutes to spare.
The area was completely deserted except for a massive cargo ship anchored at the pier.
We crept onto the deck of the ship and silently took down two armed sentries in the shadows.
Adrian kicked open the door to the captain’s quarters where Julian’s signal had originated.
The room was completely empty except for a single laptop sitting on a desk.

A large digital timer on the screen counted down from five seconds.
Julian's voice echoed through hidden speakers and welcomed us to our watery grave.
